The pain of pouring everything into a startup and having it, by all measurable outcomes, fail, is an all to common but miserable experience. It doesn’t have to be this way.

It’s not just startups, it’s every single project you embark on. There’s no magic bullet, going from an idea to product market fit is an incredibly difficult thing to do, but by putting people first and applying the correct framework, we can dramatically improve the chance of making a project a success or creating a product people actually like/need/want.

The founders of a new business or creators of a new product are very often experts in their own industry, or can be people who see an opportunity but have no industry experience.

Time is the most precious resource we have. It’s not funding nor talent (although both of those things can help!), it’s time. Therefore, working on the wrong thing, especially for a startup, is the worst possible use of its most precious resource. Running out of runway before reaching product market fit is THE killer of new ventures.

So what can we do?

When we get this question, I like to turn it back around on the ask the question poser, “how do you know your solution is the right thing to create?” I get all kinds of answers, some better than others, but if the answer doesn’t include any sort of user research, I know I can help.
