Which experience do users prefer?

Brief
Like many large companies, Cengage was looking to conduct some user research for one of their products (PlaceU) but didn’t have the bandwidth internally.
They needed to understand what some potential users, spread across a variety of personas, thought of different user experiences, so they could implement the one that users preferred.

- Conduct 20 moderated usability tests
Deliverables
We were able to source 20 total people who fit into 5 personas. We used craigslist (believe it or not) and were able to locate folks across the country who were either preparing to take a placement test within a year or had already taken a placement test within a year. Each test lasted an hour, we were able to test 3 different experiences and ask lots of questions along the way. Each test was conducted over the web using Zoom web conferencing and recorded so that we could reference the interviews when reporting back to the team.
Results
There was just one clear winner. One of the experiences was far and away preferred to over 60% of users. This is not always the finding but this time it was. The team at Cengage was able to take actions based on our findings and provide more value to their users illustrating again the value of spending time with users.
